(Raul Pompéia)
The Athenaeum is one of the work most important of the Brazilian Realism. One is about a narrative in the first person, where the personage Sergio, already adult, counts on its time of internal pupil in the College Athenaeum. The action running in the closed and corrupt environment of the school, where children, boys, professors and workers coexists. The beginning of the romance with the father of Sergio is given warning ?Goes to find the world, said me my father, to the door of the Athenaeum. Courage for the fight? Dr. Aristarch is the director of the college. Magnificent figure, it aim at only the profit. He dreams with a bust with its face. Sergio goes telling the disillusionments, the fears, the doubts, the rigid one disciplines, the friendships, the events around the proper sexuality, the questions nor always answered. The Athenaeum is one daily of a school: the lessons, the room of studies, the diversion in the swimming pool banns, the readings, the recreation, what it happen in the dormitories, the restaurant and the disputes. The world of the school always is seen and portraied from the particular perspective of Sergio (expressionism). In this manner, the institution, the colleagues, the professors and the director Aristarch are represented by personal approach, where the errors, hypocrisies and ambitions projected and are enhanced. Mixing joy and sadnesses, disillusionments and enthusiasms, Sergio, patiently it reconstructs, by means of the memory, the lived adolescence and lost it enters the walls of the famous boarding school. The work finishes with the fire ... the director lost with what he is happening with its property... Exactly in this day his wife abandoned him..
