Twenty Years After
(Alexandre Dumas pere)
Twenty years have passed since the action in The Three Musketeers, and at first sight the youthful bonds of friendship have not endured the tests of time. D?Artagnan leads the Musketeers, bitter that his brave deeds have been all but forgotten by those in power. Porthos, now a rich widow lives in gloomy idleness on his estate. Wily Aramis has turned from devout musketeer to swash-buckling priest, and is ever more secretive, mixing in high circles and engaging in romantic exploits, lover to the most powerful ladies in France. Athos, once a tortured drunkard, has acquired a son, Raoul and become an honest gentleman, finally at peace with himself. Again Dumas ties historical events to the fictional world. As d?Artagnan works for the miserly Cardinal Mazarin in an attempt to find himself a Captaincy and make Porthos a Baron, Athos and Aramis find themselves on the opposite side, serving with the Frondeurs. The mutual trust and honesty of the quartet has given way to suspicion and deception, culminating in a duel at the notorious Place Royale. It is only at this crisis point that the old bonds reassert themselves and the four are reunited once more, swearing never to cross swords with one another ever again. From here the plot escalates, as the four men cast aside individual interests to unite in common cause once more and attempt to save Charles I from execution. Evil is also present, in the shape of the ferocious son of Milady, swearing revenge on the friends, and appearing at the eleventh hour to thwart their careful plans and behead the King. Even the four musketeers can not change the course of history. Yet strength of arm and strength of mind help the quartet to triumph, returning to their separate lives with glory and honour.
