My Dog Ate It
(mike peters)
Recently, my wife jennywent for a 7 mile run with a couple instructors and another student from her dojo (Karate school). During the run, Renshi Dean told her that he just loves training her because she's the hardest working student they have. The most difficult thing, he says, is trying to teach people the same simple Kata moves week after week, when it's obvious that they haven't spent a single minute practicing outside their one Kata class per week. Not one minute. 'I've got kids to take care of, a husband to take care of, a job that takes my time, I got a phone call...' Now, their hardest working student, Sherry, is a busy CFO, cooks meals from scratch every night - no boxed prepackaged garbage, shuttles our son to and from his karate classes as well as her own, teaches religious Confirmation classes every other Sunday, reads to (and gets read to by) our son every night, goes over his homework nightly, runs 3.5 miles 4-5 times/week, does the weekly shopping, does laundry... Wait a minute. I'm out of breath... ...And she's STILL called the hardest working student at one of the top 10 Okinawan Go ju-ryu dojos in America. But many other students have the guts to say that they don't have a single solitary second during the week to practice the basic moves even though they're paying well over $100/month to study there.
