What would you do if your mother married your fathers brother before the corpse was cold? This is the situation that the young prince Hamlet of Denmark finds himself in and it pertubes him greatly. Throughout the play we follow Hamlet into his ever increasing insanity which is spurred on by the appearace of his fathers ghost beseeching Hamlet to atone the wrong that was put upon him by his brother, Claudius. The queen, unaware of the cause of her sons plight deduces that it is her sons desire for the beautiful Ophelia that has driven him to the edge. In an attempt to confirm her suspicions queen Gertrude sets two of Hamlets friends , Rozencrantz and Guildernstern, to spy on him and report back to her. To her dismay the Queen learns from her two spies that not only did Hamlet not display affection for Ophelia but in his madness treated her with anger and disgust.A chance then comes along for Hamlet to rid himsrelf of his consternations in the form of a band of actors. He plans to get the actors to reenact the night of his fathers murder and when his uncle reacts badly to this scenario he will inciminate himsef and make all aware of his guilt. The plan goes as Hamlet envisioned and due to this nonverbal admission of guilt from his uncle he decides he is justified in murderous revenge. Hamlet goes to seek his mother and confront her with the evidence but as he is arguing with herhe hears rustling behind the curtians, believing it to be his evil uncle he strikes a fatal blow. Horrifyingly, Hamlet has made a grisly error and instead, has murdered Polonius, the father of sweet Ophelia. Hamlet is banished to England for his murderous behaviour, in the company of Rozencrantz and Guildernstern but his uncle has much worse in store for him. In a letter that he has entrusted to Hamlets two friends Claudius orders the execution of his nephew. While this is all occuring, poor Ophelia cannot come to terms with her grief and decides to end her own life. Hamlet never makes it to England due to a pirates raid on their ship and returns to Denmark to encounter the unexpected sight of his previous beloved being laid to rest. During this time Claudius has convinced Laertes, Ophelias brother, that Hamletis the one that has taken his family from him. To get recompense for his beloved sister and fatherLaertes and Claudius organise a fencing match with a twist, a poisoned blade. To be sure that Hamlet will meet his end they alsodecide to posion the drink Hamlet is to consume at the beginning of the duel.Hamlet, however declines a drink and it is mistakenly drunk by his mother who dies, Laertes then admits the goblet was poisioned and that it was Claudius's idea. In the fighting that ensues Hamlet and Laertes are wounded both by the poisioned blade. Laertes dies first after confessing their evil plot to Hamlet. Hamlet then grabs the posioned sword and stabs his uncle who also dies. At this point the complex prince of Denmark also takes his final rest. Hamlet is an intriguing play riddled with suspense. Ituses love, betrayal and murder as its central themes but I believe one of the more interesting facets of Hamlet is that it makes us question how well we know ourselves and our kin. It is all the questioning of one anothers motives and the questioning of Hamlet by himself that ultimately leads to eveyones demise. Hamlet is a play you can read a thousand times and each time you find something that you never noticed before. I believe it is shakespheres penultament tradgedy.
