The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer
(Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens)
Return to a time were pies cooled on windows, fences were decorations to be whitewashed and not a means to seperate neighbors. A time were family was held as close to heaven as God himself, and a young boy's sense of adventure did not come from the glare of a television set. Tom Sawyer is a brilliant lad that follows his mischevious heart, and listens to the call of moral kindness that has been embedded within his soul. Along with his unkempt comrade Huckleberry Finn, Tom helps stamp out a murderous fiend from destoying the puritywithin his country life. Although the book has been banned for it's racist typecasting, namely Injun Joe, it holds onto aideology that good, hard, working folks can prevail over the evilist of the devil's soilders. Injun Joe is not refered to as an antagonist due to his race, but is an antagonist due to his affiliation with evil. Even the doctor that is killed in the opening of the novella ( a white man), is spurned and punished for his wrongful decisions to rob a corpse. Twain is not turning race into an issue, but instead is fighting the traditional fight of good versus evil. Tom, although clearly far from perfect, chooses to uphold what is right even if it puts his life in jeopardy. Read this American classic for its pure symbolism, it's full hearted comedic timing, and towitness a wonderous coming of age story.
