Fathom - Killian's Tide
(TURNER, MICHAEL)

Publicidade
ABSTRACT ? TURNER, MICHAEL, with O?NEILL, Bill & CALDWELL, TALENT ? FATHOM ? KILLIAN?S TIDE. 2002. Titan Books. Dull graphic novel based on comic book characters who appeared in The Tomb Raider Lara Croft Comics as a comics as a companion tale about an Atlantis like race of super-strong mermaids and mermen. Fathom (Aspen Mathews) is the beautiful heroine of a struggle against humans, and the mermen army that would try to wage war against surface dwellers. Killain, who has engineered her own story from the beginning of her adventures, is the main villain of the stories that have been told so far. This graphic novel largely leaves Fathom out of events to focus on the origins of Killain?s killing drive. It begins when humans detonate a nuclear test devise in a deep Pacific Ocean trench, oblivious of it being the home of a city of underwater dwelling people. The mermaid community is wiped out. Learning of the tragedy, another community considers what action if any, needs to be taken. They realise that their best hopes lie in remaining anonymous to surface dwellers. They send people to the surface to spy on people, but on the whole they plan on not taking any direct intervention against us. Killain is a member of a faction who decides otherwise. He is manipulated into conducting a series of raids against humanity. He attacks power stations that discharge pollution into the sea, and sinks ships. Initially, he attacks property without killing people, but when he learns that even his parents were killed by people (he had been led to believe that they died in a natural sand-shift disaster), he starts killing people too. When his own people try to stop his now out of control tactics, he kills his own kind too, and his descent into villainy is now complete, though he does regret his action. On the whole, this is a dull and unexceptional comic book fantasy with largely nondescript characters. Apart from Killain, and the barely seen Fathom figure, the other figures look pretty but largely they are inexpressive extras in the background.
