The Odyssey Of Angst Of Holden Cauldield
(J.D. Salinger)
Sixteen-year-old prep school student Holden Caulfield, just expelled from his third such school, and bitter towards the adult world of 'phonies', as he repeatedly calls them, decides to stay at a New York hotel beore returning home. The fact that he's tall, mature looking, and has had some sophitication forced upon him by the schools he has attended, cuts down on the suspicion that might follow others of that age. His encounters with a slimy bellhop/pimp, a young prostitute, an old girlfriend, his younger sister, and even two nuns, bring his angst with the phony adult world he hates to quite a climax! What he really desires is innocence, symbolized for him by his precocious younger sister, the only family member that he contacts during his time alone in the Big City. His only ambition-lack of which has been the chief reason that he's done so poorly in school-is to preserve it. This is pictured in a fantay in which his job is to keep a group of children, playing in a field of ryefrom falling into a nearby pit(catching them before they can fall-hence, the title). Also, he tries valiantly to clean obscenities written on walls-at leastinhis sister's school-so kids can't see them, an endeavor that ultimately fails, because he finds that even children can cut into wood. All the while, he mourns his younger brother, and resents his older one, a Hollywood screenwriter; in a wild moment, he plans to run away, but is stopped by his younger sister, who, although angry with him, is following him from a distance. He has a mental breakdown, and is hospitalized. The book ends with Holden's uneasy compromise with the world;he hates it when he is asked if he'll 'apply' himself-a question that his school counselors have led him to hate-but he also admits that he misses everybody, including those he's met during his New York Odyssey, down to the most depicable.
