Fountainhead
(Ayn Rand)

Publicidade
He was the ideal man she had always wanted to fall in love with?. Yet when they met, they were the worst of enemies?.Dominique Francon the daughter of the most famous architect, Guy Francon, had to fight the most strangest and most passionate of battles to win her love, Howard Roark, the one architect, highly talented and creative, yet unsuccessful largely due to the nature of the general public and ?mob mentality? of which Ayn Rand has minced no words. Her philosophy is very clear when she says that people are supportive of those second-handers who can only ?replicate? master-pieces and not ?create? them. The characterization of the protagonist, Howard Roark, is so unique that any reader would fall in love with him. He creates such a deep impact that whatever we do after that would make us think with his mind. We would find ourselves pondering, ?In my situation, would Roark do the same thing? If not, what would he do?? It would be no surprise if we find ourselves imitating Roark and there?s no harm, for Roark is the kind of man anybody would like to become or befriend. He is an egoist and highly self-centered yet the egoism and self-centeredness are truly justified. The confidence he exudes is so contagious that it even spreads on to the readers. The other characters in the story are equally well portrayed so as to strike a balance with Roark. Peter Keating, the highly successful architect and a friend of Roark, is a fine example of the ?Second-hander?. A man who cannot think on his own but was greatly appreciated by the public and the media alike, a true contradiction to Roark?s philosophy. Then there?s Ellsworth Toohey a character that can be found everywhere in today?s world. A person, who aimed at gaining power by impressing the weak minds.Entwined and delicately interwoven with these, is a beautiful love story. The readers are made to await with bated breath, the meeting of Dominique and Roark. She meets him at the quarry, breaking stones and instantly recognizes him as the man she was waiting for? and he wanted to torture her to have her completely. The conversation between them brings in the readers smiles, tears and a sense of satisfaction. Dominique punishes herself for the treatment meted out to her lover, by the common people, who she says had no right to live in the same world as his, and dole out orders to a man so much superior to them in every way. To this extent, she marries at first Peter Keating, and remains his doll-wife for some time only to remarry Gail Wynand, the owner of the most sensational newspaper in the city. The paper, that caters to the cheap tastes of people. But in a complete turn of events, the most unusual friendship is formed between Roark and Wynand and that changes life for Dominique.
