La Granja
(John Grisham)
The farm is the thirteenth work of the author and the second without legal contents (After a different Christmas, written in 2001). The story has some coincidences with his childhood. It's an easy book to read, a little long, and that doesn't quite trap you into generating expectatives, but as it is caractteristic in Grisham it is very well narrated and tells things with some much detail that one can imagine them without much effort. The main character, a 7 year old boy, that through out the plot is forced to keep many secrets, he is an only child and lives with his parents and grandparents in a farm, the only income is the harvest of cotton, that is lways afected by the changing and unforgetable climate. For the recolection of cotton they hire hillbillies and Mexicans between whom later on many conflicts will arise. In the town there are no secrets, everyone knows everything about everyone and they share their devotion for church (Baptist in this case). The only contact they have with the rest of the world is a radio through wich they listen to the cardinal's baseball games, their favorite team. They don't have phone, television or any other luxury. They feed of their own crops and of the animals they raise. No doubt, it isn't one of the best texts of the author, at least it is not among the ones I like y and I guess it's due to the fact that it doesn't have an ending that I became acustomed to when I read this author. The book could go on in a second part or even count with an additional chapter. Too much development for such a little ending. I'm not happy. From 1 to 10 I would grade it 4
