ENNIS, GARTH & BURNS, JOHN - JUDGE DREDD - TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING in JUSTICE ONE 2002 TITAN BOOKS. One of the darkest and most political of all Judge Dredd stories, in which the opponents to the law are not evil criminals but a mass movement of good citizens calling for democracy to be reinstated over the tyranny of extreme totalitarian justice which Dredd supports. A voting referendum is called, largely at Dredd?s own suggestion following events in earlier adventures such as Necropolis (covered in another review by myself). The judges truly dread the vote going against them. A Democratic victory would separate policemen from judges instead of letting a policeman dispense sentence, (often death) as he sees fit. Dredd wonders whether it might mean him having to leave the city of eight billion people, which he loves despite its astronomical crime rate. The judges and democrats alike watch as a computer tallies the votes ? the returns are due to be announced only six minutes after the last vote is cast. The result is a resounding victory for the judges, brought about by a low voter turn out. The democrats are pushed to a massive two million people protest march in which they accuse the judges of ballot rigging, but Dredd personally negotiates with their leaders and convinces them that the vote was not rigged. Democracy has died because the majority of the people have no desire for it. The values of democracy have truly died and the supporters stand in sorrow and uncertainty. They judge are now likely to rule over them indefinitely. This is a chilling reminder of how we can easily lose our rights if we don?t stand up for them. Even Judge Dredd seems to show a hint of regret that he has won the right to continue to decide on the life, death or freedom V incarceration of every man, woman and child in his jurisdiction now.
