Bellow's works reflects what is fully human in an increasingly impersonal and mechanized world. His characters are sensitive , introspective individuals who strive to understand their anxieties and aspirations . He pictures the urban environments of Chicago and New York and shows how they overwhelm the individual. Herzogfocuses on a cuckold an absent- minded professor, who is left alone by his wife and feels alienated. The novel is about his move towards affirmation. Bellow points out the protagonist?s effort to free himself from the grip of mental collapse. Moses Herzog, the protagonist ,is plunged into despair when he discovers the fidelity of his wife and when she divorces him he is left alone and alienated. After much sufferings , he discovers the way for affirmation.A middle aged Jewish intellectual Herzog has been married twice. He had divorced his former wife Daisy , feeling that she could not cope uip wiyh his intellect. His seond wife Madeleine has been cuckolding him. In fact her affair was with his friend Valentine is discovered by him after a great deal.Herzog lives in crumbling country house in Western Massachusetts, spending most of the time in writing imaginary letters to everybody-to the President, friends, relatives, enemies . ?If I?m out of my mind,its all right with me thought Moses Herzog? ? that?s what Herzog was. As the story moves on he feels close towards Ramona , his student, a single but rich woman. Finally he is healed of his emotional conflicts. He realizes his past idealism and waste lander?s brutalism are attitudes that allow the individual to hide from reality. After many hardships and mental sruggle , he finaaly achieves Wordsworthian realiztion that everyday life itself is the highest good. One of the most ways in which Bellow?s heroes shoe alienation is in their attempt to go beyond human life to live detached from morality and weakness, Herzog does so. His redemption depict awareness on the part of Herzog. He passes from one experience to another till he arrives at a state of awareness. Herzog , the typical Bellovian hero struggles with self , the sacrifice of self demanded by social circumstances and finaaly learns to humble himself in the face of reality. If Achebe?s idea of ?novelist as teacher? should be appreciated , Bellow is one such novelist who taught the contemporary post war Americans to go for affirmation.
