(Frederick Forsyth)

Publicidade
Of all the leaders of the world, there was no one targeted as much as De Gaulle, the President of France. There were a number of attempts on his life, but none was successful. He died naturally at a ripe old age. But no one ever knew how close he was to death except for an insignificant looking French detective. When Jean-Marie-Bastien-Thiry and his associates were executed, the President?s security gave a sigh of relief thinking that it was the last attempt on the President?s life. Little did they know that they were to deal with a highly professional assassin whom no one knew anything about.Mark Rodin the Chief of OAS (a French terrorist group) and a few important people went into hiding but they made a mistake. They booked the entire floor which was tightly secured. This raised suspicions. Policemen tried to snatch one of the leaders but failed. They then tracked down Mark Rodin?s personal bodyguard who went to the post office everyday day at a certain time with a box chained to his wrist. They tried to find a clue through the mail but couldn?t find anything. Finally, they trapped him and were able to snatch him. He was beaten up and bruised badly. They failed to get any useful information from him except gibberish which they recorded. They replayed the tape several times but couldn?t find anything that made sense. It was only due to the hard work, patience and persistence of Detective Lebel that they could finally close in on the assassin. The assassin was code named the Jackal. He was paid a huge sum to assassinate De Gaulle, the President of France. He was a meticulous man and worked alone. Even Mark Rodin who hired him didn?t know when and where he would kill the President of France. The Jackal refused to give him any information. He said that all plans to kill the President had failed so far because too many people knew about it.The Jackal made meticulous plans but put them into action only after he received half the fee in his Swiss bank account. Mark Rodin could give him this money only after a series of bank robberies and jewel thefts which his people conducted in Paris. The Jackal went to Belgium and made fake passports and identity cards. He also bought a rifle of the highest caliber. He traveled by car and had the rifle welded in. When he reached the outskirts of Paris he stayed in an inn for a few days where he practiced shooting with specialized bullets. When Lebel knew of the plan he called all the intelligence agencies of Europe and America asking them if they knew about a highly professional assassin. British intelligence came up with the name Charles Harold Calthrop. Through their internal security system they knew that the assassin had arrived in Paris. The security around the President tightened without his knowledge. The police also found certain clues that made them aware that someone inside Paris was giving information to the Jackal. They later knew that the person was one of the minister?s closely associated with the security of the President. But, the minister didn?t know that he was giving information to his mistress who was associated with Mark Rodin?s plan. The Jackal was an intelligent man. He made all preparations for the kill. He was the only person who knew where, when and how he was going to kill the President. No matter what happened, he knew that De Gaulle would never miss Liberation Day. He chose that day to strike. Lebel?s instincts told him that the Jackal would strike on that day but he could never guess when and where. The President was to visit three different places that day. Elaborate security was made and the police was on high alert at all places. All areas were cordoned off and no one without a special pass was allowed to enter. Where the medal ceremony was to take place, an old man, looking very ill and walking on crutches wanted to go to his apartment which was within the cordoned off area. He was wearing a great coat with various colorful medals pinned on it. The security guardstopped him, but seeing his condition allowed him to pass. Lebel moved from place to place to see if everything was going on smoothly. The guard, as an after thought told him about the old man and showed him where he had gone. This made Lebel run towards the building. The Jackal limped towards the building and once inside, ran up to the second floor. He dismantled the crutches and assembled it. His rifle was now ready. He opened the window overlooking the courtyard, aimed and pressed the trigger. Just then the President bent and kissed the cheek of the soldier on whose chest he had pinned a medal. This was the custom and the Jackal didn?t know this. The bullet harmlessly went into the wall. He loaded the rifle again and was taking aim when the door burst open with Lebel firing. The Jackal was killed instantly. The President was safe and continued his activity without knowing how close he was to being killed. The British intelligence denied that Calthrop was a British citizen. Lebel was the only one at the grave of the unknown man without a name and nationality.
