Life, The Universe And Everything
(Douglas Adams)
Adams, DouglasAdams, Douglas (1952-2001), British author and screenplay writer, best known for his highly successful science fiction novel, The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy. Adams was born in Cambridge and read English literature at St John?s College, Cambridge. He worked as a script editor for the cult science fiction BBC television series Doctor Who, writing several episodes in the 1970s in which his talent was already apparent. But it was with Hitchhiker that his restless creativity, wit, and humour came to the fore. The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy is a richly imaginative, intelligent, and comic tale of the adventures of Arthur Dent, an earnest Earthling, and his friend Ford Prefect, from ?somewhere near Betelgeuse?, after escaping from Earth just before it is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Ford Prefect turns out to be a researcher for the eponymous book, a quirky but popular reference work, and the two soon meet up with Trillian, the pretty young astrophysicist; the ultra-cool Zaphod Beeblebrox, part-time President of the Galaxy; and Marvin, the depressed robot. Extracts from the ?Guide?, full of wry commentary, are interspersed throughout the story. First aired on BBC Radio 4 in 1978, Hitchhiker became an instant success. It was followed by the bestselling novel of the series. Adams?s remarkable grasp of science is reflected in Hitchhiker and his imaginative play on scientific ideas, most notably the ?Infinite Improbability Drive?, brought him many enthusiastic fans among scientists. Three further Hitchhiker novels followed? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980) which, together with the first book, was made into a BBC television series shown in 1982; Life, the Universe, and Everything (1982); and So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984). A final adventure, Mostly Harmless, was published in 1992. Adams won Golden Pan awards for the first three Hitchhiker books. His two books about Dirk Gently, a detective with unorthodox methods who is concerned with ?the interconnectedness of all things? (Dirk Gently?s Holistic Detective Agency, 1987; The Long, Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, 1988), were also highly popular, as were The Meaning of Liff (1984) and The Deeper Meaning of Liff (1990), written with John Lloyd. His deep concern for the protection of endangered species led to the radio series and book with zoologist Mark Carwardine, Last Chance to See (1990).A man of enormous range, talent, and versatility, his enthusiasm for computer technology led him into digital media. In 1996, he co-founded the communications company The Digital Village (later h2g2), for which he wrote the BAFTA-nominated computer game Starship Titanic. Three years later, h2g2.com, an open online encyclopedic guide, inspired by the Hitchhiker?s Guide, to which anyone can contribute, was launched. (It is now managed by the BBC.) Adams was working on a feature film of Hitchhiker when he died. A posthumous collection of his writings, The Salmon of Doubt, was published in 2002..
