A Guide to Storytelling to Tiny Tots with 20 New Stories (English) Written by Manorama Jafa Cover Design Papeeha Published by Khaas kitaab foundation, New Delhi Year of Publication 2004 Price US $ 15 There is a Story in every heart. But not everyone can narrate it. And that?s only because one doesn?t know how to put it across. Story telling is an art to be mastered. Mrs Manorama Jafa, in her own way has always tried to help the prospective storytellers by not only conducting workshops for aspiring authors but also taking personal interest and guiding the individuals too. This book "A Guide to Storytelling to Tiny Tots with 20 New Stories" is another endeavour in that direction. It is really helpful in writing books or making up stories which would promote reading habits in our children. In the era of electronic media, it appeared that the print media was losing the battle the war that was apparently declared by the electronic media for the first place in viewers? heart. Fortunately it has realised that it has to peacefully co-exist, rather, be dependent on print media for its raw material- the stories. Both are complementary. Writers can no longer be complacent that books are unrivalled. With the onslaught of mass media, books were losing its market. Wisdom prevailed and now everyone agrees that the charm of books is unparallel. And this has been even realised by the children and now they are choosing to divide quality time between books and television whereas earlier it was only T V as a mode for relaxation . With this setting as background, it is prudent for the writers to bring out interesting books- in a specific appealing style on subjects which would fascinate the discerning young readers and that they would not again be thrown back to electronic media . One wrong step and all the mileage gained would be lost. What the writers need are more tales, more stories and innovative and creative ideas to make the stories more readable and enjoyable. For that writers, specially the aspiring ones, need certain guidelines. Like Mrs Jafa says at one place in this book " Like any other vocation, storytelling also demands preparation and needs complete involvement of the storyteller". Before taking up a career, one tries to find out if one has aptitude and that?s what Mrs Jafa advises the prospective storytellers "Discover your own self" and find out whether you are really ready for writing for the children. Once the person is convinced that he or she can do justice to the demands of the "adults in the making" then there is a section in the book which informs how to select a story what its style should be, its desirable length and above all the subject itself. The section briefly but clearly deals with Do?s and Don?ts of writing a good story. For example, one of the Do?s is that there should be rhyme and rhythm in the stories for the tiny tots. This point is illustrated in one of stories titled Gabbar and Babbar . It has words and sounds like OOOOOOOOOO, ha ha ha, hi hi hi. I am sure that the children are going to love hearing this story. Adhering to the adage practice what you preach, Mrs. Jafa?s has included all those stories which graphically illustrates what exactly the young readers or listeners expect from a good story. For the counsel that the story must start "With a good beginning by introducing the main character, let the main character ? face some problem ? when the main character faces a problem, the story must move towards the climax" along with other suggestions given in the book that the good story must have few characters, has animals or child character, has action and drama and has a hidden message but not didactic is one can cite the story from the book itself called Popo?s Tail. It is about a young mice in the habit of telling lies and how he realised his folly when with every lie he told his tail would grow. Ashamed Popo promised to his family never to tell a lie again. A wonderful story to warn the children thattelling lies is unhealthy habit. Mrs. Jafa?s guide is not only a handy tool for budding writers but comes in handy for both parents and teachers to get a readymade material to read out the twenty new strories which this book contains. It is a must book for the authors who are just entering the wonderful world of children?s literature.
