The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
It seems every time one cracks open a book, the heroes are working to save the world from some unstoppable doom, and always, right near the end, somehow the hero manages to stop that doom and save the Earth from annihilation.
Imagine my surprise when twenty minutes into reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Earth is obliterated.
Arthur Dent is just your normal, everyday guy. He wakes up one day to discover government employees are about to demolish his home. And his best friend, Ford Prefect, hitches them onto a ship full of aliens who've been commissioned to demolish Arthur's home planet. Those aliens then eject Arthur and Ford into space. Arthur is not having a nice day. And it proceeds to get worse, almost on every page, and you can't help but laugh out loud as Arthur is confronted by absurdity after absurdity. Like Zaphod Beeblebrox, an out-to-lunch hippie with as much chutzpah as charisma, who is the President of the Galaxy, and who also happens to sport two heads. And Trillian, known to Arthur on Earth as Tricia McMillan, as he tried to pick her up at a cocktail party and is now astonished to find she's an interstellar traveler who's dating the two-headed madman Beeblebrox. And how could one forget Marvin, the chronically-depressed, super-intelligent robot who's quite possibly the most lovable of the bunch. But don't panic! This entire book is filled with this same sort of gleeful insanity.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the most original and uniquely hilarious book I've ever had the pleasure of reading, and his twisted sense of humor has been a lifesaver on more than one occasion. Grab this book and a towel ('A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar Hitchhiker can have', says the Guide) and prepare yourself for the wildest ride ever conceived!
