Harry Potter Andthe Gobletof Fire
(J. K. ROWLING)
ABSTRACT ? J.K. ROWLING ? HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2001) Bloomsbury Books. This is a much longer Book than its predecessors, and in some ways it suffers from padding, with irrelevant meetings with characters like Gilderoy Lockhart, etc, but overall it remains a powerful and entertaining read, with a dark, tragic conclusion. The plot is quite straightforward. After travelling by a teleportation devise known as a port-key to watch the Quidditch Olympics (a broomstick hockey tournament) Harry goes to school again for his fourth year. Hogworts is hosting a major competition of its own, the Tri-Wizard tournament in which three schools each have to put forward a champion to compete for a much coveted cup. Harry Potter is too young to be allowed to compete. The official Hogworts champion is a student called Cedric, but mysterious forces get Harry chosen too, and though suspected of cheating to achieve it, he is permitted to compete alongside Cedric. The tournament involves three quests like challenges, separated by normal term time education (normal for Hogworts anyway) and various sub-plots, i.e. Hermione?s love for the hampering competitor from one of the competing schools. The three highly dangerous challenges include fighting a dragon, rescuing students from the mermaids in the Hogworts Lake, and navigating a treacherous hallucination-inducing maze. It is the latter challenge in which Harry and Cedric decide fatally to crosstie finishing line together. They grab the cup, which proves to be a port-key. They are transported instantly to a ceremony at which the almost dead evil Lord Voldermort (The villain who has chased Harry since birth (see my review of the first book in the series http://www.shvoong.com/books/408669-harry-potter-philospher-s-stone/) is being resurrected once and for all. Voldemort?s cronies murder Cedric, as only Harry was required for the resurrection, which Harry is powerless to prevent. In his own magic battle with Voldermort he is however assisted byte ghosts of his own parents, and the spirit of Cedric, who begs him to bring his body home. Harry grabs the port-key and it takes Harry and dead Cedric back to the stadium at Hogworts where Harry reveals the terrible news ? Voldermort is alive. Many refuse to believe it, but Dumbledore knows Harry is telling the truth, and promises to take steps to ensure his protection. That will be the basis for events in book five, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix.
