Abstract by Jill Stefko PhD/ 639 / 29 Septmeber 2006
Dr. Nandor Fodor was a highly respected parapsychologist, one who studies psychic phenomena, psi, scientifically and without bias. He was born in Hungary and received his law degree and a PhD. He was a psychoanalyst and educator and immigrated to the U. S. Fodor was a pioneer in researching and investigating the relationship between that psychological and the psychic. His style of writing is easy to understand and his books are a ?must? read for those who are interested in the paranormal, whether they are novices or experts. He writes with humor, so the reader will be entertained was well as educated.
Between two Worlds, is a delightful book that explores various aspects of the paranormal. Most people believe that the difference in philosophies led to the break up of the relationship between Freud and Jung. The reason for the break was the fact that Freud thought Jung was too obsessed with the ?occult? as psi was referred to then. Jung also had psychokinetic talents, the ability of the mind to affect matter and demonstrated this to Frued whereupon the, then mentor, turned pale from fear. Freud was interested in telepathy and worked with another psychoanalyst, Sandor Ferenczi to study this phenomenon.
One of the chapters is about theories about what ghosts are.Fodor explains the theories succinctly and in words that are not hard to comprehend.Fodor writes about President Lincoln?s medium, the pharaoh?s curse, a true vampire story, mediums, ghosts, faeries and other things paranormal. He presents facts and not wannabe psychic mumbo-jumbo. He minces no words.
Hewrote about and investigated the case of Gef the talking mongoose which has been very well documented and investigated by others. This is one of the most charming cases of the paranormal. The place was Doarlish Cashen on the Isle of Man, a lonely place swept by the wind and barren. Gef announced his presence in September of 1931. It was the Irving family Gef decided to live with, James, the husband, Maggie the wife and Viorrey, their 11 year old daughter. In the beginning, there was a battle. James wanted to get rid of Gef because he feared the little guy would harm Viorrey.
Then, there was an uneasy truce which developed into a good relationship. Gef was full of mischief and loved to roam the countryside and share gossip of what he learned to the Irvings. The critter made international headlines and even caused a feud in the House of Commons that spawned a lawsuit.Gef could be grandiose and claimed he was a freak, the eighth wonder of the world and even the Holy Ghost. One night, James decided to play a trick on Gef who was talking with his wife and daughter in the kitchen. He wrapped a sheet around him and put it over his head so they would think he was a ghost. When the man entered the kitchen, Gef screamed in drear terror and screamed ?Clear to hell!? The little guy?s language was very salty. James immediately threw off the sheet and Gef sobbed in relief. The critter was afraid of ghosts!
Fodor also wrote theories as to what Gef was. In the end, Fodor decided that Gef was what he said he was, a clever little mongoose.
Fodor did many investigations in England, one of which was the haunted Dean Manor House in Kent. The kitchen door opened by itself. He had investigated hauntings where the haunter was a cat or a dog. Fodor was armed with his camera and caught the ?haunter.? It was a cat. The cat would get up in the sideboard and unlatch the lock. The cat, then, crept into the kitchen and hid under the table. The kitchen workers did not think a cat could open the door and attributed this to a ghost.
Between two Worlds gives insight into the inner workings of the human mind as well as insight into the world of the paranormal.
