In The Line Of Fire
(Pervez Musharraf)
The recently released book "In the Line of Fire" by General Pervez Musharraf, has been declared controversial almost before it hit the stands. The book seems to be an attempt by Genl Musharraf to project himself as the savior of Pakistan, and to shift the blame for everything that went wrong, squarely onto others like his own Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and India in general.
According to Musharraf, it was India who took the military initiative that started the Kargil war in 1999.He goes on to boast how under his leadership as Chief of the Pakistani Army, a handful of Army units forced India to deploy at least 4 Divisions during the war. Both these facts have been 'rubbished' by those directly invloved in the 1999 war from the Indian side. The then Chief of the Indian Army, General VP Malik, has minced no words when he calls Musharraf a liar. Jaswant Singh, a minister in the BJP led Government in 1999, has called the Kargil conflict, a military and a strategic failure for Paikstan. There is no doubt that most Indians as well as Paikstanis agree with him. Musharraf raises yet another controversy - that of the alleged threat by US to Pakistan by the US State representative Armitage, to bomb Pakistan and take it back to the 'Stone Age' This also does not hold too much weight and has been categorically denied by Armitage himself. Finally, Musharraf also blames India for stelaing Pakistani Nuclear secrets through their Nuclear scientist - AQ Khan."In the Line of Fire" was expected to be a more mature level headed memoir from a person of the status of General Pervez Musharraf.
