Discreet, cordial, allergic to the interviews and the gratuitous fame: Rubem Fonseca (1925) writer, university professor, journalist, guionista and critical of cinema it is one of the big representatives of the contemporary Brazilian literature. Author of 23 novel volumes and stories, it was winning of the XIII Edition of the Prize of Latin American literature and of the Caribbean Juan Rulfo, corresponding to 2003. The jury considered that the work of Fonseca has contributed decisively to the renovation of the narrative prose, because it introduces a way of counting that he/she takes advantage and it reprocesses forms coming from the popular literature as the black novel, but also those of the political novel, the social one, the existential one and the erotic one, among other things. This novel is a sample of all those narrative qualities and much more than it is to discover. Gustavo Flavio, a writer fascinated by the feminine world, philanderer irredento, famous, admired, arrogant erudite (character also of Black Past), it is involved in a series of homicides, those which, Mandrake, the main suspect's lawyer, shares with us (the readers), almost becoming something like that as his personal assistant, thing that motivates our intrigue more than close, making worse our senses to want to solve the case. The plot leaves developing in a particular way that he/she gets the attention to the few seconds of having begun the reading. Already to the beginning Mandrake justifies, that that next, saying us: Unfortunately I didn't date neither I numbered the transcriptions, error that had made already with the recorded tapes, what harmed in certain measure the chronological thread of the narrative. Maybe be partly that the film experience of Fonseca has influenced in this way of defragmenting the chronological line, ordinate and sequential of the formal narrative, but the truth is that I don't believe that another better way has existed of literature is an answer to the violence that blinds to the society of this time. It is obvious that the literary pattern that more has influenced on Fonseca is that of the police novel and of the thriller, besides its studies of Right and its 27 years like police commissary, but its ends don't intend to be discovered to the murderer. Their literary feat is to discover the human condition. The stimulating search in this novel, is unwrapped among the aroma of the tobacco, element infaltable in the whole work, the frustrating and exciting eroticism cultivated by the characters combined with the love of high risk, because it demands the lovers to be plotters or victims, together with the infaltable art of writing. All those characteristics are those that partly captures us with a sense of familiarity to this novel. Characters easy to identify, onlooker not to find similar hidden thoughts, just as us: with doubts, fears, full with sarcasm, humor, irony, weaknesses, bitterness, men and women that surrender to the such life which, without restrictions, leaving you to take for their personal motive forces: the ambition, the desire or simply to love and to be loved. Love that in this novel, it lapses in a thousand ways, clearly three: Amanda, Luisa and Silvia, Gustavo's women, who finds in each a characteristic infaltables for their life, that which makes impossible the fact of separating a them, no matter how much it is forbidden or before the eyes of the other ones it is a sin, in own words of Gustavo: If God existed, he/she would ask for forgiveness to God? As God it doesn't exist, I make the same thing without asking for forgiveness to anybody. Maybe Gustavo's condition, is maybe the one that would have taken it to live those situations so tangled and scandalous, that particular love that he/she received from each one of its lovers it is the one that inflamed with matter it forces the condition of suspicion under which remains until the end. They are not only many the aspects that he/she plays us to dto the moment to read this novel, of the condition of the characters and their porqués, but of ourselves, of how we work in a world like that, in a world that is unwrapped among things extraordinary views in an ordinary way by our subtle accommodation to the daily thing and the lack of acquired surprise for so many years in an easily prostituted society, where the only thing that we have left to rescue is something to smoke and a love that shares with us that cigarette. A novel not very extensive (it doesn't exceed the 100 pages) with a daily language easy to digest, active, loquacious, it maintains a provocative rhythm that motivates our desires of continuing reading (innate curiosity) and to finish the history how much before. Then, it is worthwhile to venture to know to this, said by many, contemporary teacher of the gender, to wrap up some intrigue, suspects, a novel that, although he/she can us or not to like police style, he/she makes arise in us that intuitive flame and our pleasure for the enigmatic thing.
