Queen Of Darkness - Book 3 Black Jewels Trilogy
(Anne Bishop)
This is the third and last book in the Black Jewels Trilogy and does not disappoint. Jaenelle has returned from Lorn?s hold, Ebon Rih, stronger than before, wiser and more terrible in the eyes of her enemies. To her friends and family, their love is now tinged with fear and awe at the unseen limits of her powers, but beneath it all, she is still Jaenelle, the sweet loving witch-child. Now she fights for her Territory. She fights for her family, she fights for her friends. She has declared she will do it alone! For all her awesome powers, Jaenelle is foremost a Healer. It is this fact, that Dorothea and Hekatah will use to trap her. If that plan fails, then there is always her family. Daemon, now restored to health and is First Consort to Jaenelle, with Lucivar at his side, backed by Saeton and an array of assorted demons, harpies, warlords and witches, who are as determined to protect Jaenelle, as she is to protect them. The intrigues and treacheries are deep. The Dark Priestesses, trading on fear and loathing, are quick to use whatever vessels they find, in which to drip their poisonous words. Their desire is absolute. To rule all the Territories. To do this Jaenelle must either be subjugated or dead. They prefer the second, along with Saeton, his sons and demon-dead brothers. Vain, willful witches, who will not accept that Jaenelle?s court is different to their own, stalk her halls with the aim of attaching and having sex with males, whether they are amenable or not. For warlords must serve the wishes of witches, except for the small point that Jaenelle refuses to keep pleasure slaves and allows all her males freedom of choice. Powerful, emotional currents race throughout the Territory, threatening at every point, to derail the stability of Kaeleer. Here, towards the final closure of the trilogy, do we see Daemon Sadi at his awful best, as he stalks with deadly grace, his brother and father, who are the bound captives of the High Priestess. Here, he shows how revenge can be sweet, flaying the mind rather than the body. He truly lives up to his name of the Sadist, while his Queen gives all she has to save her world. These three books leave the reader wanting more from the characters who live with such joy and anguish throughout the pages. It is a riveting tale of a dream which lives and grows.
