One Night With A Prince
(Sabrina Jeffries)
A respectable widow convinces a jaded gambler that nobility has less to do with heredity than character. Lady Christabel Lyon, Marchioness of Haversham, has something in common with the Prince of Wales. Both of them are being blackmailed. Lord Stokeley, scandal mongering Baron, has proof that the Prince has a legitimate heir other than Princess Caroline. The Marchioness?s late husband had stolen letters from General Lyon (Christabel?s Father) in which His Highness acknowledges another son. Marquis Haversham sold these letters to Lord Stokeley in order to pay gambling debts. Lord Stokeley has threatened to publish these letters unless the Prince agrees to let the Baron marry Princess Caroline. The Prince tells Christabel that he will ruin her Father unless she manages to get the letters which are most likely hidden somewhere at the Baron?s townhouse. Rumor has it that Lord Stokeley hosts a high stakes card party every year at his estate in the country. Two dozen of the most reckless gamblers in the Ton gather at Lord Stokeley?s where they vie for a small fortune in a week long tournament. Whatever his other faults, the Baron is an extremely skilled card player. Only one man in London is capable of besting him at the tables, Gavin Byrne. Gavin Byrne, illegitimate son of the Prince of Wales, has many reasons to hate his noble sire and few reasons to help the Marchioness Haversham. She shot at him the first time they met when he came to collect a debt from the Marquis. Now the intriguing little minx has the nerve to ask a favor. Christabel wants Gavin to escort her to Lord Stokeley?s card party; so, that she can search for letters the Baron received from her late husband that could embarrass the Prince. When Byrne offers to retrieve the letters, Lady Lyon adamantly refuses because she does not trust him. All London society knows there is no love lost between Byrne and his father. More soldier than society miss, the Marchioness is determined to personally retrieve her letters. Gavin admires the Lady?s honesty; as well as her voluptuous figure and obvious wit. Only gamblers, spouses or current lovers are invited to Lord Stokeley?s annual high stakes tournament. Christabel suggests she attend as Byrne?s mistress, in name only of course. Gavin agrees; partly because the Prince has promised to grant him the title of Baron after the letters are destroyed. Also, Byrne wants to spend more time with Christabel. But first, he must teach the Marchioness how to play cards. Since only the top eight contestants stay at Lord Stokeley?s estate during the final rounds of the competition, the Marchioness has to be good enough to survive the ?eviction? games. Christabel is an apt pupil and Byrne is an excellent tutor. Like any successful gambler; whatever the stakes, Gavin plays to win.
