On the night of 2nd December 1984, in the heart of India, Bhopal, the people were in a celebration mood and none of them aware of the impending danger which was to come upon them that night. On that fateful night took place one of the worst accidents in the world comparable to the atomic explosion that had taken place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Methyl Isocyante(MIC) one of the world?s most dangerous chemicals ever produced which was used by the world?s third largest chemical company, Union Carbide, to produce a fertilizer named Sevin, which was supposed to be the harbinger of good times, would turn the city into a mass graveyard. How many people died nobody knows but the estimated count is between ten to thirty thousand .
The establishment of the factory in the heart of the country was hailed as one of the best things that could ever happen to India. Union Carbide was known for its safety standards throughout the world. But no safety could stop the demonic MIC to show its true colors which the company was fully aware of but had hid it from the people. On that night an explosion took place in one of the storage tanks containing 40 tonnes of MIC, a virtual atom bomb. This was not the result of something happening that night but was a result of series of incidents over a period of time which showed the utter negligence of the company towards the factory.
Dominique Lapierrie in this book gives a detailed history of the beautiful place, Bhopal, about the company Union Carbide and what happened that night in the city. It is a heart rendering account of the people who had to face the wrath of God.
