Aneel didn?t believe in God for he was certain that God didn?t exist and was invented by men to explain things they couldn?t explain. Aneel had everything a man could wish for, a beautiful wife, two lovely children, and a successful business with offices in three countries, a house with everything in it, three cars etc. Added to this was the fact that nothing bad could ever stick to him. Even if something bad happened, like losing his job, he would get new job, ten times better, almost overnight. There was an invisible cloak of protection around him, which kept him safe under all circumstances. The belief that the protection was something that he generated made him arrogant. However, one-day things started changing. His business crashed and all the companies he owned came down. He got a job offer with a publishing firm to edit one of their business titles and everything seemed great, except that within less than three months, the company started going down. As things went from bad to worse, one night, he went out drinking with his friends. He doesn?t remember anything that followed other than few hazy images, until in the morning he found his bedroom suddenly filled with policemen. Five hours later he was in jail like an ordinary criminal with rapists, drug pushers and murderers. He later found out that had broken up and messed the things in his house, hurt his wife so badly that she was in hospital. He was shocked when he learned that he had threatened to kill his wife and children, for he loved them beyond his own life. His wife was so scared of him that she had decided to take her children and leave him. In less than a years time everything was lost, business, job, freedom and family. During this moment of self-examination in jail he noticed a man reading Bible having a look of peace on his face. He realized that in twenty-five years gone by, he never had known peace for a moment. He called out to Jesus almost in a whisper and asked his help to come out of the mess. When he spoke to his wife again he said he was ready to do anything to keep family together, including getting back to religion. She was surprised considering his earlier antipathy towards religion and the fact that he didn?t get the children baptized. His wife decided to give him a chance and the first morning after he was released he attended Mass. He now wanted to accept Jesus from his heart but was finding difficult for he had rebelled and believed God didn?t exist for twenty-five long years. He was in the church looking helplessly around and his eyes were drawn to the picture of Our Lady. He was admiring it, thinking about how beautiful the lady in it looked when he heard her say, ?Aneel, come to me.? For a moment he thought he was imagining things but then he heard her say it again. He got up and walked to the picture and looked at it, and was filled with wave of fire, which filled every pore of his body. It was the most beautiful thing that he had ever experienced and he believed that all you have to do is take one step towards God and he will cross miles and miles to get to you. From then on, there was no turning back. He met Fr. John from the parish who took him under his wing, gave instruction on various aspects of Catholicism before he was ready to make a confession. Since he wanted to make a good confession he sat down in front of his computer and started typing out his sins. He was horrified, not much by the volume of his sins, but by the fact that he didn?t even realize he was doing something that was wrong. Fr. John heard his confession and asked him to say a rosary as penance. He was shocked, just a rosary for 25 years of sinning. Fr. John discerned what he was thinking and said, this is not punishment. All your sins are forgiven. Jesus paid the price for them when he died on the cross. This moment made him realize of God?s immense love for him and he swore that he would ever do anything to hurt the wonderful Savior again.
