The Catcher In The Rye
(J.D. Salinger)

Publicidade
Holden Caulfield has a problem. In fact Holden has many problems but
his first call of business is to figure out how to explain to his
parents that he has failed out of Pency Prep, another upper crust boy's
school floating on the outskirts of New York city. The young protaginst
decides that a weekend of fun in the big apple would be good for
everyone before breaking the news to his loving parents. After
introducing his nose to his roomate Stratlader's fist, our hunting cap
clad hero jumps on a night train into New York city in order to spend a
little quality time with him self in the big apple. The classic under
achiever, Holden takes the reader on a brief but exciting ride which is
that of the inner workings of an extrememly angst ridden teeanager in
the the early 1950's. His description of everyone that is "phony" may
leave the reader a little confused and questioning weather they like or
dislike the narrator, regardless his story is gripping and anything but
"phony". Holden's repeated use of the terms "depressed" to describe how everything makes
him feel. And "phony" for how everyone behaves gives the reader the
sense that he is either trying too hard to convince someone of his
individuality or despite his extremely poor self image how intelligent
he really is. The back drop of Salinger's novel is the
timeless streets of New York city in which Holden manages cover alot of
distance in a short amount of time. From his run in with a sad young
prostitute and her extorting pimp in his cheap little hotel room, To
getting drunk and hitting on some less than desriable older women at a
jazz club our main charater is never at a loss for things to do, and
stories to tell. Much like Holden the story gets harder to
understand as the troubled young man makes contact with as many people
from his past as he can when in the city. From a date with his
ex-girlfriend who has absolutly no idea whom she is ice skating with to
a conversation in the living room of a former teacher who could or
could not be a sexual predator. It seems that the only
consistantly good person in Holden's life is his younger sister Pheobe
whom he finds at school and convinces her to follow him to a local
museum. His over protective nature seems to stem from the loss of their
brother Allie which the reader gets the impression may be the result of
Holden's actions when they were younger. As the story reaches
it's conclusion one may or may not start questioning the mental
stability of the young master Caulfied who pictures him self as an
adult but lacks the maturity and patience inorder to be "grown up". Its
not surprising that the main character never fully explaines himself
and the reader is left to make their own decision on what happens with
the young man with the broken psyhce.
