Twelve Sharp

"Twelve Sharp" is the twelfth Stephanie Plum adventure from Janet Evanovich and it's another good read in a series which is consistently fun.
Stephanie Plum works somewhat reluctantly as a bond enforcement agent (bounty hunter) for her cousin Vinny, a bail bondsman in Trenton, New Jersey. The job is occasionally dangerous and always chaotic, but it beats selling lingerie in department stores or flipping burgers in fast food joints.
In her latest adventure, Stephanie's friend and coworker, the darkly mysterious Ranger, is accused of murder and disappears. More murders ensue with eyewitnesses certain it was Ranger. Stephanie has no doubt that Ranger is capable of killing but can't bring herself to believe that he's a murderer, so between bond assignments Stephanie sets out to find Ranger, not certain if she's going to help him or bring him in.
Meanwhile a crazy young woman with a gun is stalking Stephanie. The woman claims that Ranger is her husband, that he ran out on her after stealing all her money, and that Stephanie is the reason.
Like the others in the series, this book is humourous and fast paced with an engaging first person narration and colorfully endearing supporting characters: Lula, 300 pound former 'ho and now Stephanie's erstwhile partner; the sweetly oblivious Grandma Mazur; Sally Sweet, transvestite punk rocker and school bus driver; arch-enemy Joyce Barnhardt; and a new character, doleful Melvin Pickle, loser and pervert (caught doing something he shouldn't in the multiplex) whom Stephanie impulsively recommends to take over Lula's filing job in the bonds office.
As always, the fun comes from watching Stephanie and her cohorts, inexpert but determined, soldiering through situations simultaneously serious and outlandish and generally succeeding by virtue of grit and pluck.
Stephanie Plum is a classic character and in her twelfth outing she's as fresh and sassy as ever.
