Arthur Dent, a descendant of apes is liveing on the planet Earth along with several other billion ape descendants, not knowing that they are not as special as they initially thought.
Arthur Dent's House was about to be destroyed to make way for interstate bypass. A hilarious argument begins to follow between the contractor and Dent.
The contractor states that the papers for the demolition were on display while Dent counters saying that they were on display in a cellar with no stairs and no light at the bottom of a filing cabinet behind a door marked beware of the leopard.
Ford Prefect, Dent's best fried comes along and demands that Dent have a drink with him. He swoops Dent away with the assurance from the builder that no damage would be done to Dent's house (the liars). Prefect explains that the Earth will be destroyed in exactly two minutes to make way for an intergalactic bypass (coincidence? I think not). Ford Prefect 'sticks out his thumb' and they are picked up by the Vogon Construction Fleet. Bye-bye Earth. The Vogons just discovering their hitchhikers, proceed to dump them into outer space by trapping them in the airlock. The improbability of being picked up within the 30seconds before they die is not impossible. They are picked up by Zaphod Beetlebrox, the runaway president of the Galaxy and Trillion, the only other human to have survived the demolition. Trillion was the fancy of Dent in a party in England. There is where Zaphod picked up Trillion and hoisted her into outer space. picked up quite by chance by the improbability Drive. The group then proceeds to the legendary planet of Magrathea. There they learn that Millions of years ago, a great super-computer called Deep thought was built to answer the question 'What is the meaning of LIfe, the Universe, and Everything?' To which Deep thought replied (after 7 million years of thinking) 'The answer is
42' They in turn ask how could that be. Deep Thought responds by saying they need to build a greater computer in order to find out the question. That is how Earth came to be created. The great super-computer was to solve the question of life, the universe, and everything. The Vogons destroyed the Earth 5 minutes before the 5 million year program was complete.
This book was extremely intriguing. I loved the plot as well as the content. This book deserves 5 thumbs up!
