The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the one that started it all, Douglas Adams' first book in the inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy. In interviews, he told magazines that he came up with the idea one drunken night in Europe, lying on his back, looking at the stars. He thought it would be a fantastic idea to have a travel guide for the entire Galaxy, and his combination of surreal, bizarre humour and quirky settings and characters made it a hit as a radio series for the BBC.The first book is much loved and lauded by geeky hipsters, who love to reference it in games and movies. This book was the material on which the movie, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, was based, thought it did poorly at the box office, due to harsh reviews from Adams' fans. The first book is quite inventive: one morning, a typical Englishman named Arthur Dent wakes up to find that his house is going to be demolished to make way for a new highway. He protests, naturally.Soon, though, things get heavy. He bumps into an alien named Ford Prefect, who mysteriously gets Arthur teleported onto an alien ship which is, fittingly, a demolition spaceship that will demolish the Earth.Reading any of Adams' work is quite invigorating... his unusually fertile imagination makes you go 'Hunh!' in surprise and tickled pleasure. Arthur's reaction is one we'd all have, if we were suddenly teleported on a horrible spaceship filled with horribly cruel aliens.Shock. Terror. Confusion. A moment where you realize that your entire life was an illusion of safety masked with ignorance. And you so badly want to return. Adams does a fantastic job of portraying the fish out of water with Arthur Dent, which makes the Hitchhiker Trilogy less a science-fiction work, but more of a statement on our inability to come to terms with the nature of the universe.
