The Fortune Teller, By Machado De Assis
(Juliana)

Publicidade
The Fortune
Teller is the story of Vilela, Camilo and Rita involved in a love triangle. The
story starts in a November Friday of 1869 with a dialogue between Camilo and
Rita. Camilo strongly refuses to believe in the Fortune Teller and never
suggests Rita in a humorous way. The fortune teller is featured in this story
as a charlatan, one of those that tell what suits everybody. She?s a sinister
character that, although she doesn?t have her name revealed (machadian
characteristic) it stands out as a character that cheats the protagonists. Rita
believes that the fortune teller can sort out all her problems and miseries.
Camilo, near the end of the story, when he?s almost having his affaire with
Rita found, in a
breach of despair, recurs to the same fortune teller who, on her turn, deceives
him the same way as she does to all her other clients, including Rita. The
woman uses effect sentences and metaphors to appear wise and master of Camilo?s
fate who comes out trustful of her words and when he arrives to Vilela?s
apartment he finds Rita dead and he?s killed in cold blood by his childhood friend,
that is already aware of his wife?s betrayal and awaited him with a gun on his
hand.
