Once A Year In Skirolawki
(Zbigniew Nienacki)
The roman was a shock not only for readers but critics as well. Nowadays, the emotions diminished, the book forgotten and, in my opinion still depreciated. The deprecation is evidently due to literal understanding. Except rich erotic elements, rare on that time, author presents, little idealistically, village community, intentionally suggesting much broader relevance, perhaps even to the whole humanity. Dr Krystian Nieglowicz, a physician of exceptional learning combined with wisdom and commonsense, represents a character of family doctor we wouldn't wish for any better. Local reverend, painter, writer, ranger and policeman are all experts of their professions. Even ordinary people seem to represent extraordinary merits and focus reader's attention, in spite of their often indignant past. Such is a character of notorious murderer-pedophile which gives a touch of sensation to customary novel about Skirolawki Community. A reader is presented with a community picture to analyze roughly or scrutinize with a microscope. It is up to him or her which attitude to adopt. Scrutiny gives opportunity for, not only, exceptional learning of human nature but also, quite practical observation, like recipe for cucumber pickling in my case. The book is colorful, with fast action, sense of humor, a bit on the side of old Polish tale-telling. Worth reading, despite of common opinions.
