The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
Douglas, Douglas, Douglas! The man was a genious! The Hitchhiker's Guide is not only a witty, cleverly composed story, but it is also a commentary on '...life, the universe and everything'. It is a parody on Britishness and all the things Britain holds dear, like beaurocracy. It follows the classic, Ullyses or Jason and Argonauts theme, of going on a quest. But it is a quest like no other. Arthur, with the help of his long lost friend, who happens to be an alien named after a car, is forced to flee an Earth on the brink of destruction. Earth, by the way is being destroyed because it ignored the paperwork stating that it was in the way of an intergalactic highway! It helps that it's not only very sci-fi but also very satirical. It also helps that the characters, apart from being very strange, are extremely familiar. I am certain we all can identify with an apathetic Arthur Dent, at times and possibly have met a manic-depressive Marvin; and I am sure we have all come across a two headed ego-maniac (metaphorically speaking, of course!), who we have had no option but to go along with. It is a combination of all these elements, along with a fantastic plotline that will hold the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the realms of 'classicdom'.
