WINGS OF FIRE

This is the story of a man, soaring high standing on the sands of the sea shores of Rameswaram, a small town in southern India, to limits beyond the sky. This book gives a glimpse of Technological revolution in general and of Rocket technology in particular.

Strong roots (foundations): The atmosphere of the little town of Rameswaram and its people including parents, teachers and people of the locality provided the necessary inner metal and laid the foundation of the person called A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of present India.

The pillars of the foundation: Three people seemed to have shaped the thinking of President Abdul Kalam and helped him in the acquiring necessary skills. Prof.Sponder, who taught aerodynamics in Madras Institute of Technology, was an Austrian with immense practical experience in aeronautical engineering. During World War II, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp by Nazis. Prof. Pandalai taught aero-structure and design engineering. He unlocked the secrets of structural engineering to the students. Prof. Narasingha Rao was a mathematician, who taught thermal dynamics. On his persistent advice on how to prove equations in aerodynamics, He acquired a ?surgical knife? skill to aeronautical designing.

Destiny: After a short training in HAL, Bangalore, he had two opportunities. One was a career in the IAF and a job at the Directorate of Technical Development and Production. He was not selected to the air force which he attributed due to his nervousness. (As he was very anxious, he could not speak well). This has disappointed him for some time as he could not get a career of his choice.
Sense of Failure: While working at the directorate, a project team was formed to design and develop an indigenous Hovercraft Proto type, ground equipment machine (GEM). At that time the defence minister of India, VK Krishna Menon was very much interested in the project. The hovercraft was named Nandi and the defence minister took a small ride in it with the scientist. But by the time the project was completed, Krishna Menon was out of office and that project could not take off as the Government was not interested. This incident also filled a vacuum in him for quite some time.
Patron and a career: Professor MGK Menon, the director of TIFR visited him and viewed his hovercraft and after that he received an interview call from Indian Committee for Space Research. Prof. Vikram Sarabhai interviewed him and received him very warmly. He was sent to USA for a six months training programme on sounding rocket launching techniques at the NASA in Virginia. Soon after that The Thumba Euatorial Rocket launch station was founded and his carreer started with it,
Important achievements: 1. 24th July 1974 ?Launching of SLV-3
2. 25th February 1988 Launching of Prithvi.
3. Pokhran II , Nuclear tests.
He received Doctorate degree several times from many universities and got Padma Bhusan ,Padma Vibhusan , and Bharat Ratna ( the last one the highest honour)from the Government of India . More Than the Personal achievements the team work done by him paved way for the release of energy from the young generation to launch India into the period of technical revolution.
