Roman Magic And Witchcraft In Late Antiquity
(Natasha Sheldon)

Publicidade
Based on the author?s Master?s dissertation, this work deals with the use of accusations of magic during the fourth century, a time of social and religious change. The discussion focuses around a series of trials throughout the period in which accusations of treason went hand in hand with the use of magic and divination. These occurrences escalated throughout the period, targeting high and low alike with accusations of the malicious use of magic.

In order to understand the motivation behind these occurrences, the author explores the understanding of what was ?magical? in the ancient world. By analysing legal texts, she concludes that whilst magic was consistently regarded as a socially marginal practice, the borders defining such practices were shifting according to the times and it was possible for once acceptable religious practices to become magical. An especial significance is given to the rise of Christianity during this period and the methods it used to consolidation its power.
The study concludes that magic and religion are socially defined. The mutation of the definition of magic and its use in political accusations during this period are a reflection of the political and religious changes occurring, whilst remaining a tried and tested method of removing opponents. It is a scenario that was to repeat itself during witch hunts of the 16th century.
