Les Loups De La Calla - La Tour Sombre, Vol. 5(wolves Of Calla - The Dark Tower, Vol. 5 )
(Stephen King)
The Dark Tower is the emblematic work of Stephen King, the point of convergence of all its other novels. Gently but surely, the author wove subtle bonds, but which are far from being pain-killers, between its "isolated" stories and the Dark Tower. Far from being simply a major work of the fantastic literature, this saga underlines an impressive literary ambition, in addition to the quality which emerges some: that to tell an immense, long, intense and complex search. Roland de Gilead, pistolero, apartment in another world, with another "when" that ours, started the long search which must lead it to the Tower. Indeed, the balance of the worlds is breaking down, under the influence of King Cramoisi, a mysterious character who wants to impose his dictatorial reign on the universe. The Tower contains the answer which will make it possible to Roland to restore balance. In way, it meets several people: initially Jake Chambers, a boy of ten years, coming from New York 1977. Eddie Dean, then, a junkie coming from 1983. Susannah, finally, young black condemned to the wheel chair, and which comes the Sixties. Together, they accompany Roland in his search, and become in their turn of Pistoleros. After many adventures, whose certain happy, the such union of Eddie and Susannah, which made them cross several world different, they arrive in the world of Calla, an almost perfect counterpart of the far-west. People live essentially of the culture of rice, the breeding and agriculture. A characteristic of the place east which the women are confined almost inevitably of twins. The "singleton", the children born without twin, are very rare. All would go for best, in this peaceful place, if there were not the Wolves of Tonnefoudre. The Wolves are creatures strange and dangerous, considered invincible and without pity. Once by generation, approximately, they breaks in Calla, to remove one of the children of each pair of twins and to take them along to Tonnefoudre, their den. They return a few days later, "crânés", completely décérébrés. Their body grows in a disproportionate way, their spirit is empty, and their life expectancy is very short. Up to now, the inhabitants of Calla never dared to rebel against the wolves. By cowardice or good direction, they agree the painful sacrifice their children with the relief to see remaining the different ones, and the insurance that they will arrive to them nothing. With the insurance also that their city and their own lives will be saved. But this time, when Andy the Robot Messenger (many other functions) announces the arrival of the wolves, the inhabitants decides to fight, taken along by Tian Jaffords, a small farmer, and the father Callahan, a rather mysterious man. Within sight of the situation, the pistoleros decide to help Calla and to fight the wolves. In same time, they make some return tickets in 1977, in New York, thanks to the thirteenth ball of the magician, "the thirteenth black one", where an intrigue in connection with the Tower is woven; Calvin Tower, bookseller, are also owner of one ground to the abandonment, in which pushes the pink, pink which has a direct bond with the balance of the worlds. But of the not very scrupulous men, working for King Cramoisi, are about to seize some, wanting to force the sale of the ground. The pistoleros must thus exploit two plans at the same time: Wolves of Tonnefoudre, and those of New York. The situation still becomes complicated when they discover that Susannah, which previously undergone the attacks of a demon, is pregnant and suffers from a new split personality. By examining the situation, they discover that the father Callahan Vietnamese soldier also of their world. This character comes indeed directly from the novel "Salem", of the same author. After having fled of Salem and to be soiled by the Barlow vampire, Callahan enfugagné its life by making any kind of work, very as a combatant the vampires which it found. It thus drew to him the attention of the henchmen of King Cramoisi. After their having escaped during years, it finally fell into one from their trap, and died about it. It was then found in Calla, where it settled. Roland and they his will have to redouble efforts to find allies to fight against the wolves, to discover how they manage to find the place inevitably where the children are hidden, to prepare their plan of battle, to save Calvin Tower of the henchmen of King Cramoisi, and finally, to hope for that the creature which grows in the belly of Susannah will wait the end of this situation criticizes to appear. There Stephen King signs an excellent volume of this immense history. Details which seem unimportant are distilled with parsimony, to re-appear in a capital way when one does not expect it. The evolution of the characters is soft but undeniable, and their characters are quite marked. The book is rather long - more than 600 pages - but it is read with a great facility. And as it is often the case with the very good stories, one too quickly has the impression to have arrived at the end; one would still like to still bathe in this single universe for some pages. Fortunately, there remain still two volumes to prolong the magic...
