The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe
(C.S. Lewis)

If you want to escape into the realms of rich imagination, read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the much loved novel by C.S. Lewis. Although the term "classic" is often used to describe lesser fictional works, its use in describing this book is definitely warranted. Without meaning to sound cliched, this is a classic tale of good versus evil, with good epitomised by Aslan the Lion and evil embodied by the White Witch. Caught in the middle are the characters of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, who initially enter an obscure Wardrobe in a house in England and are instantly transported into the mysterious world of Narnia. What follows is an intriguing tale that is, as it states on the sleeve, possibly 'the most exciting and enchanted adventure ever written'.

Good versus evil is the theme that pervades the narrative, and while the ultimate polarities of these two concepts are Aslan and the White Witch, there are other examples, such as the latter's evil perpetuation of endless winter and Aslan's return to Narnia heralding the arrival of spring. Another example of the theme is the way that Edmund is temporarily brought under the influence of the White Witch while Peter, Susan and Lucy choose to follow Aslan. There are of course other memorable characters in the text, but if you haven't read it then I don't wish to spoil your experience - I just want to awaken your interest. Although the book is an outworking of the relatively straightforward good/evil paradigm, when you read it you get a deeper appreciation of this premise, just as you would expect from a man as complex as C.S. Lewis was. Although The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was written in 1950, its remains as popular now as it was back then and I highly recommend it to everyone.
