Say Uncle! Life In Dc With My Filipino Uncles
(Nita Mondonedo Smith)
This is a wonderful new book by Nita Mondonedo Smith. It is the story of growing up in Washington, D.C. in the 50s and 60s with 10 Filipino Uncles. These uncles immigrated to the U.S. between the years 1913 and 1961. Their stories are stories of courage, stamina and wit. There is the story of Uncle Joe whose navy carreer included service for the President of the United States on the yacht, Sequoia. There is the delightful story of Uncle Bo who immigrated to the US in 1926. He was possibly a lawyer who arrived penniless to our shores. After years of struggling in meanial jobs, he received his B.A. from George Washington University and went on to work for the government. In fact, the book is full of glimpses of immigrants struggling in a new evironment. You'll marvel at the resourcefullnes and strength of these wonderful uncles. All struggled in an era when they could not rent a hotel room, eat in a cafe, or go to a movie in many cities in America. Skillfully written, well documented and historically correct, Say Uncle details the joys, sorrors and triumphs of Filipino-Americans and Filipino-American veterans. Additionally, the reader get a feel for the obstacles, prejudice, and hardships prevalent during that era so long ago in America. Of particular note, is the chapter detailing the immigration of Filipinos to America. Say Uncle! is full of glimpses of Filipino traits, customs, history, and humor. Say Uncle! is full of passion, sorror, labor and victory. It is an excellent read. I highly recommend it to the general public, particularly teens to adults. Say Uncle!
