Place: Canada, small suburban city, middle and lower class, Jewish family/society.
Benny, a young, unfortunate looking man, returns to Canada after having been on service in the 2nd world war in Europe, fighting for Canada. He has never really been accepted as academically inclined but a good, responsible citizen. Cannot live up to his father?s ambition of him becoming like a successful young acquaintance. Feels the outsider no matter what and returning from the war he has changed dramatically but no one seems to notice this except for Bella, the also unfortunate-looking outsider daughter of the local shopkeeper. Benny however starts having trouble functioning in society, having shivers and panic attacks daily and can not work Bella understands Benny and they form a loving relationship which makes him able to confide in one of his very traumatic war experiences: he has killed a man at war. She supports him and slowly they form a family, get married and have a son and Benny can work again. Life seems good to Benny for a while, until Bella mistakenly takes him to the cinema where a newsreel reminds him of his wartime horrors and trauma. They go home and Benny has his worst trauma attack so far, leaving Bella helpless. When she awakes the next morning, she is told by Benny?s parents and her father that Benny has been run over and killed. She, however, knows that he walked in front of the car with the purpose of killing himself.
