My Loyal Dog Saved My Life
(Otakar Batlicka)

Publicidade
It has been a long time since Otakar Batlicka has been a novice in the primeval forests of South America, when one day he set off from the cottage of his friend into the town of San Antonio. He knew that a tiring journey of many days awaited him.
On the first day he walked about 20 km and has not met any men only rampant tropical growth and from time to time a piece of unreachable blue sky.
Next morning as soon as it started to dawn Otakar set off on his next journey. Approximately after two hours of lonely walk a very strange feeling seized him. He had the impression that he was being followed that he was not alone in the primeval forest. With a constantly increasing feeling that somebody was following in his footsteps he continued his journey all day. He was throwing glimpses at the nearby underwood. And after a while - yes, the end of uncertainty. It was an ordinary wandering dog.
It was a sturdy dog, no thoroughbread pedigree. He had a body of a bulldog, the shape of his head reminded of an Allsation. As soon as Otakar moved the dog is disappearing in the thicket. A happy mood got hold of Otakar, he was preparing dinner - he was roasting a piece of smoked meat on top of the fire. The smell of the roast differentiated remarkably from the damp smell of the forest. Here he was again. The dog could not resist and climbed out of the bushes. Otakar called him Flash and he and the dog got to know each other and became good friends.
The following day Otakar came across a deserted log cabin and decided he would camp there.
Tonight they would enjoy a better night?s lodging, but Flash was more interested in running down to the river. Otakar made a point that first he wanted to tidy up nicely. He was walking towards the junk by the back door, when suddenly he could hear the awful much-feared noise of - kerr, kerr. All wild animals flee when they hear this jarring noise and even the bravest man?s bones freeze. Rattlesnake!
Otakar was turning his head and could see, that he had no hope of escape. The rattlesnake was crawling through the open door into the room. It was not the first time that he looked at a rattlesnake from a distance of just a few metres. But this time he was caught without any arms. He left his gun and his stick in front of the fire log. The rattle snake stopped three steps in front of Otakar, curled itself into an attacking position and its tail, with indent ragged circles, was shaking angrily and emitting that noise, similar to dry peas rolling over in a box of matches.
It seemed as if his legs turned into wood, he was only waiting the moment when the snake?s head would attack him with its pair of poisonous teeth.
Suddenly an idea came into his mind to jump to the back wall and throw an armful of sacks on the snake. But before he managed to make his first move something happened. Suddenly he sighted a dog?s snout on the edge of the rectangular light door behind the snake. Flash jumped into the log-fire and barked sharply. The snake turned around as quickly as a lightning and its head shot against the red body of the snake. Flash, however, managed to escape in a unique way. Like a steel spring he managed to shoot up into the air so that the snake?s body flew under his body and stroke with a blunt smash into the frame of the door.
The snake was as if stupefied and the dog took advantage of that. He snatched the snake?s body and a noisy crash sounded. And again jumped far away.
The rattlesnake recovered and launched a few new attacks. Flash acted in exactly the same way as before, shooting himself up high, and the snake was knocking his head off on the wall of the log-fire. Flash was biting his teeth in the rattlesnake?s body in the brakes between attacks.
The reptile was losing its strength; its attacks were faint and uncertain. After a while it was not even attempting to reach the dog, only turning its head and following the dog?s movements. Suddenly Flash came out of defence into attack. He jumped several times over the rattlesnake and did not allow him even a minute?s rest. As soon as the snake bent its head exhausted towards the earth, the dog?s teeth bit into its body, so it was covered more and more with bloody wounds. With an exact jump he appeared on the snake?s back of the neck and seized it with his mouth straight behind its head and the snake?s ligament was worried to death.
Flash was protecting Otakar for the rest of the walk and finally they reached the railway station. Otakar wanted to take Flash with him but had not enough money to pay for the dog?s fare. The dog was watching Otakar as the train started to move. Otakar opened the door for Flash to jump in but unfortunately another train arriving at the station cut off the dog?s path. Otakar looked sadly at the place, only a dog but a loyal friend.
