Gifts tell us a lot about the giver, the reciepient and about the sincerity of their feelings for each other. if deciphered , gifts can tell us a whole story. .
Gift of magi is one such story ,which has the emotion "love" in its backdrop, an emotion which can be called a gift to mankind. In a subtle way, the author has portrayed touchingly " love and sacrifice " through this story set in christmas, a time when everything seems to be cheerful and beautiful. Though the story is about a young couple struggling to survive in the big bad city, it has got universal appeal as it transcends all barriers of class and creed and focuses only on their love for eachother. Anyone who is in love or waiting for true love to strike them can identify with the two protagonists who shows the essense of love through their simple but sweet sacrifices for each other.
Love is not only about spectacular actions or great sacrifices. It is also about the small but thoughtful deeds done for our loved ones. If love is about building monuments, fighting wars and singing ballads, then love is also about warming his slippers in a cold winter night. It is ultimately love which prompts them to sacrifice their seemingly small, but prized possessions in order to get something special as christmas gifts. Something special that each knew would be just right for the other .
But unfortunately all their well meaning actions and sacrifices comes to nought when they realise how futile their efforts have been. This is sharply in contrast to that of the gifts, brought by the magi, chosen with wisdom and care. Gifts that were symbolic and that which benefited their reciever. Unlike our protagonists, who acted on an impulse and foolishly wasted probably their greatest materialistic assets on sacrifices that benefitted none . But the thoughts that led to it were unquestionably genuine. S+adly such sincerity has become rare to find in todays world
