Bill Gates' Email Solution...a Rebuttal
(MADHAV SHASTRI)
Bill Gates has been talking about dealing with the unsolicited electronic mail issues - and he's proposing a 1 cent charge for each email delivered. Basically stamps for e-mail. I don't know if you've seen this, but I had heard about it, thought it was a bit "out there" but figured it was more to start a discussion about process, rather than a complete proposal. I had only seen it in Tech publications - almost a "request for comments" kind of presentation... I thought. Then this weekend's newspaper ran it as a page 1, business section article. Suddenly it's a general population issue and we need to be very careful how this is presented and proposed. I don't think people are thinking this through much. If you really think about several different aspects of this proposal, it's both not practical, and it looks to break the "even playing field" of the Internet. If you consider the infrastructure it would take to charge micro-payments, to incur charges against your companies "account" every time an email is sent, that alone is something that just hasn't been addressed to-date.
