And Then There Were None
(Agatha Christie)

Ten people are invited under various guises to spend some time on Indian Island. Some are led to believe that they are being invited for a free holiday by an acquaintance of theirs; others are invited on to the Island to work. The guests find it strange that their hosts are not available to meet them on arrival, but settle down to an enjoyable meal and get to know one another.rite your abstract here. After dinner, all are startled to hear a stranger's voice coming out of nowhere that names each of the guests and a crime that each of them has committed, but has not been charged for. Shortly afterwards, Tony Marston dies after drinking whisky laced with cyanide. Shortly afterwards, the guests are surprised to note that the ten porcelain soldiers used as a table decoration have now been reduced to nine.

The next day, more deaths occur and gradually the guests begin to realise that they are unlikely to escape the island with their lives. After each death, modelled on a poem called Ten Little Soldier Boys, which describes the end of each soldier, another porcelain soldier disappears from the middle of the table. Yet after an extensive search of the island, it is discovered that there is no-one else on the island - therefore it must be one of them. With no telephone and no help coming from the mainland, the surviving guests must work out who the murderer is before it is too late.

It is not difficult to believe that this is the world's best selling mystery. Even though it was written in the 1930s and the social class system and communication and so many other things have changed since then, the psychological element is still as fresh today as it would have been then. The book also discusses the justice system and whether those who were not punishable by law for their crimes should be made to face up to their responsibilities. The fact that they are eventually made to face their own deaths and therefore change from murderers to victims is ironic. I think that it is interesting to hear different people's opinions on the correctness of this and whether punishment should be given out by someone outside the law courts, whether the law should be changed, or whether the law is fair as it stands at the moment.

his book is not only an excellent mystery; it also gives the reader something to think about. On top of this, it is a closed plot, taking place on an island where only a certain number of people can be guilty. The book is well-written, as usual for a book by Christie, involves and draws in the reader from page one and follows through right to the end without disappointment. It is not my favourite Agatha Christie, but it is certainly up there in my top five. Highly recommended for anyone who likes a good read, not just for fans of crime fiction. And if you can work out who did it before the end, let me know!
