Team Of Rivals (the Political Genius Of Abraham Lincoln)
(Doris Kearns Goodwin)

Publicidade
There are probably more books written about our 16th President than any other, Abraham Lincoln. Having read many of these previous books on Abe, I was expecting more of the same. After awhile, what new can be said about Lincoln? Sure recent years have produced National Enquire type works have come out questioning Mr. Lincoln's sexual preferences. Anyway, this new book Team Of Rivals reveals a great deal more than just facts about one of the most gifted politicians of our governments history.
Imagine, Lincoln picked, for his cabinet, men who, initially, held him in contempt. Some of them were the very men expected to win the nomnation in 1860, prior to Lincoln's surpirse win. The author spent ten years writing and researching this volume and it shows. She gives us a new insight into Lincoln that derieves from the very men and woman who should know, those around him, at the time.
Yes, I gained a new insight into Lincoln and more importantly, I was able to gain a sense of what people felt at that time in our history when owning another human being was a normal situation. Yes, it was a horrible concept that eventually tore our country apart, but also brought in back together, of course due, in a large part to the uncanny gifts of Lincoln. Surprisingly though, I gained appreciation in another area of our history or rather, our nature. Through the diary entries and letters that Ms. Goodwin used, I saw what beautifull writers and poets we used to be. Before the age of television, phones, emails etc..people wrote letters and expressed themselves in a way that was, well, beautifull. Time after time, I read through the pages of Team Of Rivals finding the lost art of writing and expressing feelings and the brilliant mind and caring soul of Abraham Lincoln.
If you have read a lot of other books on Lincoln, you will learn something new with this one. If you have not read much about Lincoln before, you will gain a new appreciation of just how great this man was. Yes, log cabin to white house is certainly a remarkable story. What is more remarkable is what Lincoln did after he got there. This book changed me and that is no exageration. It made me want to be a better man, father, reader, writer and american.
