The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
(J.R.R. Tolkien)

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, arguably the best known and most highly regarded fantasy books of all time. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy takes place in a place called Middle Earth which is inhabited by all manner of fantastic beings, including elves and dwarves, wizards and dragons, trolls and orcs, hobbits (also called halfings becuase of their diminuative size) and many other mythical and magical creatures and races.
The Fellowship of the Ring begins in the Shire, a village of hobbits, where we meet the main hero of the story Frodo Baggins. When Frodo's uncle Bilbo Baggins decides to leave the shire on his 111 birthday to see some of the world again, he leaves his home and positions to his heir Frodo, including his greatly prized magical ring which possesses the power to make the wearer invisible. Only later does Frodo learn from his friend Gandalf the Grey, a wise and powerful wizard, that the ring he has inherited is the one ring of power forged by the dark lord Sauron, which was lost to him long long ago, and that even now Suaron has learned that it has been found once again and is sending his foul servants, the ringwraiths, to recover it. The ring possesses incredible power, but it also has an evil will of its own which will corrupt anyone who owns or uses it for too long. Frodo then begins a journey to seek out the counsel of people wiser then him who will know what should be done with the ring, and on this journey he is joined by Sam, Merry, and Pippin, other hobbits who are his friends and who want to come along for the adventure and so they can look after him if things get dangerous. On his way to the council he has a number of adventures, and also meets Aragorn (also called Strider) a ranger who knows Gandalf and helps him to complete his journey.
At the council there are a number of suggestions about what is to be done with the ring, some want to use it to defeat the growing power of Sauron, who is even now waging a terrible war to conquer all of Middle Earth and enslave the races of men, elves, dwarves and hobbits. Others suggest that the ring could be hidden again, but it is decided that this would be only a temporary solution and the decision of the council is that the ring must be destroyed, which can only be accomplished by throwing it into the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged. Thus a fellowship of the ring is formed, which consists of the four hobbits, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, along with an elf named Legolas, two humans, Aragorn (who it is revealed is the last king of Gondor the greatest human kingdom) and Boromir (the son of the current steward of Gondor), a dwarf named Gimli, and Gandalf the wizard. The fellowship sets out on its journey to return the ring to Mount Doom where it can be destroyed, knowing that if they should fail and the ring should fall into the dark lords hands that all will be lost for Middle Earth.
The fellowship has many adventures and undergoes great danger on the first part of its journey. In the Mines of Moria they encounter an ancient demonic being known as the Balrog, and they lose one of their number. After a trying journey unexpected events lead to the breaking of the fellowship, and Frodo and Sam continue on towards Mount Doom in the heart of Mordor (the realm of the dark lord), while the rest of the fellowship must face other dangers that have arisen. Here ends the first part of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Personally I would highly recommend the Lord of the Rings to anyone who is at all interested in fantasy or mythology. The detail which Tolkien has put into Middle Earth is unmatched by any other fantasy writer I know of and the scope of the story is fascinating and compelling. Although it does begin a little slowly for some readers, if you get through the beginning you will find yourself compelled to keep reading as the story builds momentum. Thus I would recommend it for all adult readersand for older children (it is a little slow and scary at times for children under the age of ten or so).
