The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)

Publicidade
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is undoubtedly one of the classics of modern fiction and has endured the decades since Douglas Adams wrote it on the strength of its pure genius of plot structure and random detail, and pure hilarity. The book begins with Arthur Dent, an ordinary Englishman, who fights valiantly to keep his house from being demolished for a bypass (and you really feel for the guy, especially because he has a particular knack for being funny and not a little thickheaded)... only to find himself rescued by his alien friend Ford Prefect when Earth itself is demolished for, ironically, a hyperspace bypass. A stunned Arthur finds himself in the ship of the Vogon race, whose poetry is truly something to be witnessed first-hand. Arthur is essentially thrown into a world of which he knows absolutely nothing - space.
Interspersed throughout the narrative are excepts from The Guide, which is, of course, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a completely hilarious and vitally useful electronic book with so many pages that Arthur's head begins to swim. His journey continues across space and into the Heart of Gold, a ship stolen by the President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox, where he meets the two-headed nutty President, an Earth-woman (and someone he met at a party) named Tricia McMillan (or Trillian, as she is known now) and, the most delightful of all the characters, Marvin the depressed android.
The book tracks Arthur's funny and sometimes completely pointless adventures across space, including the issue of how and why Earth was demolished, the greater purpose it was supposed to serve, and... the function of two white mice. Needless to say, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a book that everyone ought to read, if only because laughter is said to be the best medicine, and this is a story whose wit and ingenuity will certainly keep you crying with mirth right through.
