Five Point Someone
(Chetan Bhagat)
Humorous, gripping, youthful and crisp ? these are the adjectives one can use to describe ?Five Point Someone- what not to do at IIT? by Chetan Bhagat. The story revolves around three friends: Hari (the protagonist), Ryan (your typical cool dude who hates his parents for their money) and Alok(the nerd with a financial crisis) who are studying at IIT(Indian Institute of Technology). Each IITian is assigned a grade point average after each semester and this is what the three friends struggle to cope with. They come up with different strategies to make sure they reach somewhere close to average or above average. Ultimately, due to the never ending stress and pressure in their lives and their desperation, they resort to infamous means to crack their exams. They story also involves an affair between Hari and his professors daughter Neha, and their constant endeavours to understand each other. Somehow, even though this book deals with IITians, all of us will be able to identify with it, as it depicts basic human behaviours and relationships like friendship, love, anger, frustration, pleasure and shame apart from failure which we all face at some point of our lives. Lastly, this book is for everyone: the youth as it revolves around them and what they are currently going through; the middle-aged, as it may remind them of their own struggles and what lies ahead; and also the elderly, as it may bring back fond and bitter memories of their own generation when they were young and how times have changed as have today?s youth. In short, those who read this book will definitely identify with one aspect of the story- it?s very true to life characters and a mischievous someone who we all carry within us throughout our lives and so a MUST READ!
