The Colonel does not have who writes to him. - (1957) Gabriel Garci'a Márquez. History passes in a small town, without doing much, pressed by a dictatorship that has cost the life to several of its inhabitants, among them, Agustín, the son of the Colonel, pestered in the gallera to distribute clandestine information. Others have been forced to flee; except Don Sabas compadre of the personage, a powerful businessman, (who does not lose opportunity to remove benefit from each situation), only leader of its party that managed to escape "miraculously" to the political persecution. From forward edge we see the hard economic situation that the colonel and his ill wife of asthma, cross after the death of their son. Each corner of the house smells of poverty and nostalgia, uncertainty and eternal delay; day after day they have been spending its little savings, product of the sale of the few things of value that they had. The only thing that they have left is a rooster, inheritance of its son, in who it has the colonel based his hopes; while it sees, as one to one their few properties are disappearing to pay their expenses and to maintain to the animal against the will of their woman, who insists on which she undoes of him. But it is the rooster of Agustín, How to sell it? ; in addition in January the fights begin and its luck could change. Luckyly the friends of their son when finding out the situation, propose to be in charge to him of the feeding of the bird, because they also hope anxious saving each cent for the great fight. The days pass with dense monotonía, the news that arrive are little and confused by the censorship, all the delay is centered in Friday when the mail arrives and the colonel hopes, waits for a letter who never arrives, fifteen years hoping the letter of its retirement, fifteen years of excuses by part of its lawyer and silence del government. Friday to Friday the scene is repeated, the distressed colonel waits hiding its anxiety, the letter that will end its vicissitudes, but the result is always the same one: nothing. Already without more resources nor the news of his pension, it decides to sell the rooster, so compadre Sabas goes to his that offers nine hundred pesos to him, and although it receives an advance by the sale and reaches to spend part of the money, something happens that it makes change him of idea. It was late of December, Friday, the colonel had been going to wait for the mail, as always and following the administrator it surprised a tumult in the gallera, it remembered that that day the training began and entered. There it was his rooster in the middle of the track, afraid to perhaps face something unknown, but after the first skirmishes their legs no longer shook. Germa'n (one of the friends of its son) jump to the track and showed it the public who ovacionó frenetically, but the colonel took off it and left the place between shouts and applause. All the town salio to see happen it, had waked up of ten years of lethargy. It walked to its engrossed house in its memories, when arriving it said to him at its wife who the rooster was not sold and it gave part to him of the advance so that it gave back his compadre to it. Something had changed in our colonel, a confidence and a security that could not be demolished by the constant doubts and questions, as well as the multiple reproaches of its wife. A species of intima and quiet revolt give in these last paragraphs the image us of a true colonel: brave, calm, it signs... Without doubt Gabriel G. Márquez is a teacher of the narrative, with this story that to us maintains expectant of principle to aim, catches to us and he makes us live next to the personage every moment. We underwent the long delay, we were hopeless with its eventful journeys, we made bitter ourselves with its resignations, but in the middle of all that dramatic quality, we smiled with the sweet naivete of the personage. This it is a story to enjoy and to reflect.
