The hero -Holden Caulfield- has been kicked out of his umpteenth school and decides - before facing his parents- to spent some days in New York first. There, he gets tangled up in his questions about life and through a jungle of thoughts he manages to find a way... Holden is 17 and he is fed up. He is fed up with himself because as a coach he left his team's gear on the subway. He's fed up with his romm mate's pimples and with his friends he laugh like hyenas at a movie that isn't funny. Actually he is just fed up with all the crazy people around him. In New York, strange meetings follow each other and Holden's aimless roam through the city takes the form of a quest. Holden is looking for a girl and he takes his ex, Sally, to a musical - they have a fight. Holden hires a prostitute but decides at the last minute he doesn't want her - and gets beaten up. Then he decides, in the middle of the night, to visit his little sister Phoebe. He sneaks into his paental ome and wakes Phoebe. they talk, about their brother Allie- who died- and eventually about Holden. Phoebe is like a mirror for Holden: is there actually something you do like? Out again in the night a desperate Holden goes to an old teacher, Mr. Antolini, where he stays the night. In the middle of the night he wakes up: Antolini is stroking his forehead. Totally scared Holden flees the house and sleeps at the station. In the morning in the rush hour he is scared and wants to flee, get away from everything that is known to him. There is however one person he has to say goodbye to... When he meets phoebe she has her suitcases with her as well: she wants to go with Holden. She is angry when Holden doesn't want to take her. After an afternoon at the zoo, Holden and Phoebe end up at a carrousel in the park, and Phoebe takes Holden home...
