There is something mysterious and impenetrable about the Holy
Shroud, something that not even scientific examination with carbon 14
has succeeded in revealing. Although even the Church has accepted the
verdict according to which the relic most precious to Christianity
dates from the end of the 14th century, what logical explanation can
there be for the stange accidents, fires and sabotages that have
destroyed the cathedral of Turin, where the Sindon is held safe?
To the detectives of the Department of Art, the last fire forms part
of some form of recurrent criminal pattern. This is indicated by the
charred body found in the church: like those of others found in similar
attacks on the cathedral, it lacks a tongue and fingerprints. But this
time, the detective Marco Valoni is disposed to take the investigation
to its ultimate conclusion. With the aid of the educated and brilliant
Sofía Galloni, he enters a dangerous spider's web woven around the
Sindon: a conspiracy, dating from ancient times, that involves
powerful, rich men, able to change the course of the world with their
acts.
