Warrior Of The Fourth Estate
(B.G. Verghese)

Publicidade
At the outset let me congratulate B.G. Verghese for authoring RNG?s (Ramanath Goenka) biography. If the extracts are so erudite and moving, what the whole biography could be?

There is a general impression that RNG was only a newspaper baron. The biography throws light on his overall personality and rich contribution to India's freedom struggle, to snatching Indian democracy from the jaws of death, and to establishing a free and fearless nationwide press. Express was the first to start "string journalism" by publishing the newspaper from different centers simultaneously, and investigative journalism, both under RNG?s initiative. What the other newspapers are doing now are imitations of what RNG did.

Contrast RNG's refusal to carry his photograph in the Express with the series of faces that appear in the Express now. Contrast this also with some other newspapers where the Editors-in-chief take every opportunity to have their photos published in their newspapers.

If the Express had remained a unified group after RNG?s death, it could have enriched his life?s mission, and continued to remain a formidable force. The split has certainly cut into the vitals of Indian journalism.
