The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy is one of those undescribable books; even the movie made of it could only cover a smallish part of its content. In the preface, the author explains how the original inspiration came to him while he was lying in a field, too drunk to walk, and had just come from a town where he had tried asking for directions to four different people, all four of whom happened to be deaf and mute... yes, it's that kind of book. An exceptional, hilarious story including aliens of all remotely imaginable kinds, the Guide doesn't have the tiniest claim to realism, and the only one sensible thing in it is a bewildered Arthur Dent, going through situations ranging from the extremely weird to the hysterical in his bathrobe, ever more confused. This book is a long string of humorous intellectual candy. Try the Improbablility Drive one - it sparkles in your mouth. As for the eponymous Guide, it provides slightly twisted humor as well as very necessary explanations. Want to see the famous computers and androîds of the future? Admittedly, they can do quite a few things, but they can also be a real handful. Sometimes the humor veils food for thoughts, even serious philosophical questions. Douglas Adams offers off the wall theories for everything, from the creation of the Earth to the origins of humans, including the true nature of mice and dolphins... none of those theories was ever meant to be taken the least bit seriously, but it's fun intellectual candy to chew on. This story was obviously written with immense enjoyment, which is communicated to the readers. I seriously doubt that anyone could claim to have read the book and not liked it. The style is quick and fast-paced, and the lenght of the book is due only to it being jam-packed with delirious action. Enjoy!
