Metamorphosis
(Franz Kafka)
Imagine waking up one day and no longer knowing who you are, not even belonging to the human race any more, but finding yourself transformed into a hideous insect. This happens to a young travelling salesman who, after his initial shock, immediately feels impelled to adapt himself to his new situation. He imagines how he could carry out his daily tasks in his present physical state. While he is occupied with these problems, his family discovers the terrible news and react - logically - with despair. But little by little they too begin to accept the news and, with great effort, manage to change his little world - his room - according to his animal needs. But man does not live on this alone, and the protagonist begins to decline and suffer because of the lack of communication between himself and those around him. With this bridge between the day-to-day and the fanstastic - linked wiht horror - Kafka weaves his magic and makes the reader dare to Imagine that this, which looked on in any way is clearly fiction, could be a real possibility.
